Law Enforcement Memorial Day

May 20, 2002

The Clark County Sheriff's Office, Springfield Police Division and the Ohio State Highway Patrol held our annual Law Enforcement Memorial Day on May 20, 2002. The ceremony took place on Fountain Avenue outside the Clark County Heritage Center.

This was the first time in Clark County History that Fire Divisions from the City of Springfield and Clark County have participated in the Law Enforcement Memorial Day Remembrance.

On September 11, 2001, as the rest of the nation watched these historically tragic events unfold in awe and disbelief, the courageous officers, fire fighters and EMS personnel in New York City and Washington, D.C. put their own fear aside and tried relentlessly to help.

Seventy law enforcement officers from seven local, state and federal agencies, 343 New York City firefighters, one Jersey City, New Jersey, firefighter, and over 3,000 civilians were killed in the World Trade Center. The New York City Police Department lost 23 officers and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey lost 37 officers in the tragic and cowardly terrorist attack. Almost 200 military and civilian personnel were killed at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. These numbers have been added to the already growing number officers killed in the line of duty this year.

This day and all who were lost will never be forgotten. Let us also not forget the survivors who risked their own lives to save many others and will continue to do so. These aggressive and senseless acts brought great sorrow to many law enforcement families, as well as Americans as a whole. Today our nation is strong and proud and still fighting to bring those responsible to justice. Let us not forget these heroes and those that have served Clark County.
