Agency Tour

BUILDING HISTORY:

In 1980 the Safety Building Facility was dedicated after efforts by local government, in response to a need for a new jail and Police/Sheriff facility, to get the building funded and constructed.  With growth of the Sheriff’s Department in staff and operations, the then current facility was far from sufficient.  The new building took operations to more modern levels and continues to maintain its modern abilities.  Throughout the past 26 years, some improvements and modifications have occurred to keep up with the Sheriff’s Office ever-changing operational demands.

Jail / Holding Cells

When the building was conceptualized, the vision of an updated operational jail took shape to replace the existing facility built in 1880. The resulting Clark County Jail has 5 floors, 12 pods containing 12 cells each, 3 holding cells in book-in, 5 isolation cells, and two pods dedicated to trusties and work release. The Clark County Jail is a full service facility and is governed by rules from The Ohio Bureau of Adult Detention and the Standards.

Communications Center / Records Area:

When the building was constructed, the amount of space needed for computer equipment was underestimated.  Therefore, as the Sheriff’s Office modernized, it became apparent that the Communications Center was inadequate in both technology and physical layout.  It was a high priority to improve the ergonomics and working conditions of a high stress and demanding job.  In 2004, the Communications Center was completely relocated to a larger area.  In June of 2004, the new Communications Center was dedicated.  The new space provides for the latest in modern technology and comfort allowing for proper ergonomics and increased efficiency.

In addition to the above highlights, several areas of the building have gone through or will go through a “face lift” to freshen up the décor, appearance, and functionality. At the same time the new Communications Center was created, the Investigations Division Offices were enlarged providing an electronic media area and records storage facility.
